BOROUGH MEETINGS.

The ordinary meeting of the Devoaport Borough Council was held lasi evening, when there were present His Worship the Mayor (Air J. 0. Macky;, and Councillors 0. Mays, Handley, ii. Logan, junr., .G. Creeth, ana J. V. Entricah.

Sanitation. —Mr Twentyman attended and lodged a complaint concerning what were believed to be cases of persons burying nightsoil on their premises. The foreman of works was instructed to inquire and report. Re* garding a complaint re the cteposll oi> nightsoil in a paddock facing the Lak£ Road, the Mayor stated that ne aii<S Mr Gilruth and Dr. King had visited the place and found that the place was suitable, but that the deposits should be better covered. It was resolved to instruct the contractor to see that this was attended to. Dr. King reported on his recent -inspection of certain butchers' shops in the borough, and recommendeid certain measures to remedy the. defects. The Council re-solved-that the owners of the premises reported on by Dr. King be notified of the recommendations, and that; Dr. Kingljbe asked to see that theyi werf carried out. The Inspector of nuisances reported having .visited a large number of houses in the borough since last meeting. He found things satisfactory, with the exceptionof some dirty back yards and fow'lhouses.

Removal of Rubbish.—The Mayor stated that he intended to, give notice to move at the next meeting that the Council should undertake the removal of household rubbish throughout the borough in future. He considered that this was a work which .fairly came within the scope of the Council's work. It was done by corporations In the Old Country, and it was a great, help tqwards ensuring the health of a district. He was -very strongly of opln~ ion that the Council should bear the whole cost of the removal* of rubbish, and intended to move accordingly.

Claim.—W. Coleman wrote claiming compensation for the loss of a valur able thoroughbred horse, which had fallen into an unprotected drain excavated by the contractor for > tne drainage works. It was resolved to disclaim any responsibility in the matter. . ■ ■■.;■■' . "■■ 1:., ■.

Nuisance. —Mr J. Miller wrote coinplaining of a cess-pit in Churchrst.; which was a menace to. health. It was resolved that the Foreman of Works take immediate action to, remedy-the nuisance. :'■' * • . ~ Cemetery.—On the recommendation of the Cemetery Committee it was resolved to relieve the sexton at the borough cemetery from his duties, ana to make arrangements' for a new sexton. • ■ • •, '' ■-'*' '•""■"■■■ ■"■■<■:

Loan.—On the recon^mendation of the Finance Committee it was re*solvecl that a sum of £7500 be b.drrowed, to complete' the drainage*l'.works, purchase Mount! Cambria, aiid for the forming and metalling of streets, at' a maximum interest of 4| per cent., and that a special rate of 3d in the =B be levied for the interest, the loan to be for .twenty-one .years. :. Street Works.—The Foreman '. at Works recommended that Ann-s't.North be partly formed and metalled with material from the Rewer tunnel.Tliat the eastern end of Beaoji Jfoad be formed and the kerbirig.repaired. And that Eata. Matai, Domain, streets and other roads be put in proper condition by being formed, metalled and shelled where required in order to .make them passable. The Mayor, said the works were urgent. The report was adopted. v ' . '■•■■.'••;

Rate. —It was decided on the motion of the Mayor to levy the usual general rate of 1/ in the' £ on all rateable properties in the borough.
