THE TRANSPORT STEAMERS.
The preparations on board the sterner Wuimate for the reception of the Fifth Contingent are being pushed forward with despatch, The respective quarters assigned to the non-commis-sioned officers and the privates are nearly ready. Forty additional electric lights are being installed, and special arrangements are being made by the chief engineer, Mr Belcher, to ensure an am pie supply of pure water during1 the passage to the Cape, which is expected to occupy from 29 to 30 days. The Waimate carries 3000 tons of'cargo less than usual, in order to make room for coal. 2200 lons of which will be taken on board here. About 550 tons will be consumed on the passage to Albany, where the stock will be replenished. Master Gunner Richardson has relieved Sergt. Major Sanderson in the post of Camp Sergt. Major. Mr Richardson will be assisted, by Corporal Conlev of the Permanent Force. Capt. Dunk" fills the post of quartermaster, and Capt, Loveday have been appointed camp adjutant. Tents have been pitched for Canterbury men. and picket lines prepared for their horses.
