THE WATER SUPPLY.
The waterworks engineer (Mr.J.; Carlaw) has presented the following; report with reference to the proposal to use Lake Takapuna as a permanent? source for the city water supply:— . "The distance in a direct line from? the Lake to Kauri Point is three miles; and a-half, thence across the harbouri to I'onsonby reservoir, four miles and^; a-half; total, eight miles. The ground at the point is high enough for an intermediate reservoir, but the depth} of water, viz., S4 feet in the channel? varying as it does from that to 26 feet i and 12 feet in 2SOO yards, makes it out of the question to attempt to lay; the pipes under the water. If it was thought desirable to use the Lake for: a water supply, the pipes ought to be"; carried over the harbour on a good: bridge, which could be utilised for : traffic, and to the cost of which, no doubt, the Government and others/ might contribute; but prior to doing-, anything as regards that scheme the inflow of the Lake should be thoroughly tested. Owing to the depth of water in the channel nothing of a 1 cheap or temporary character should be attempted." *
