BOROUGH MEETINGS.
DEVONPOUT,
The ordinary meeting of the Devonport Borough Council was held last evening, whene there were present:—Messrs J. C. Macky (Mayor), M. Kiccol, J. C. Entrican, G. A. Creeth, 0. Mays, R. -Logan, jun., R. Duder, J. Dunning, and Handley.
Stanley-street.—Mr TV. J. Napier wrote asking the Council to do some iilling in at Stanley-street in front of the cricket ground, and also to cut down the briars, etc., there. Keferred to the Streets Committee.
Xuisance.—Mr S. T. Twentyman wrote complaining of a nuisance
caused through rubbish being deposited in the gully at the junction of Lake and Owen's Eoad. It was dec tided to prohibit rubbish being deposited at the place in question.
Bubonic Plague.—A letter was read from the Auckland City Council enclosing a resolution passed re the conference of Boards of Health (which has already taken place) in connection with the bubonic plague. The Mayor said that as 'far as their own district was concerned Mr Savage, the foreman of works, had taken special care with regard to inspection in the borough, and he reported that the borough was very clean.
Mr Wells' Claim.—The Council decided to pay Mr F. H. Wells the sum of £5 without prejudice, in compensation for damage sustained by his w-aggon on Beach Eoad where the drainage excavations were being carried out.
Resignation.—Miss G. Hall wrote resigning her position in the Borough office. The Mayor and others spoke in high terms" of commendation of Miss Hall's valuable services in the oftice, and it was resolved to give a bonus o f£s.
Tenders.—The following four tenders were received for breaking road metal for the Council: —John McKanghton, Wm. Stanley, P. Lynds and J. Wallis, It. Beamish and J. Mahoney. The tender of Lynds and Wallis was accepted.
Cemetery. —The foreman of works reported that a serious fire occurred in the O'Neill's Point cemetery on Sunday and some damage was done to the trees, etc., and the chapel had a narrow escape. He' recommended that the cemetery on the left hand side where the fire was should be ploughed twice a year. The Mayor said that Mr Savage (foreman 01 works) and the four men with him who went'out to the fire worked very hard to extinguish it. The recommendation to plough the cemetery Avas adopted, with the addition that oats be sown on that part of the reserve. It was stated that the mortuary chapel had been scorched by the fire on Sunday, and it needed repainting.'
Streets and Works Committee.— The report of this committee contained the following- recommendations:—(l) Re high level footpath in Clarence-street for Grammar School Trust: That the Council pay half the cost of this work as requested by letter of 6th inst., provided that the level of the path be lowered so as to be the same elevation from end to end as the present path as the corner of Victoria Road and Clarence-street, and that the slope from the edge of the path to the side of the roadway be even and regular throughout the roadway to be 30ft wide; the Grammar School Trust to pay all engineering charges and all expenses outside the actual work". (2) He breastwork Beach Road: That the matter be deferred till a complete plan comprising the whole of the Beach Road from the dock to the North Head has been prepared. (3) Re Cheltenham Beach reserve: That the trees be trimmed and the lower branches lopped; that a pathway be formed with surplus material from the drainage, and that the surface of the reserve be levelled as far as possible with any surplus soil from the drainage in the adjacent streets; that the entrance be made the same as to the other reserves with shaped puriri posts, leaving an opening for perambulators; that all projecting barbed wire be removed. (4) I?e firebell for Cheltenham: That the matter be deferred. (5) He drainage Albert Road: That Mr P. Burgess be requested-to do all in his power to abate the nuisance till the drainage scheme is sufficiently completed for him to connect. (6) That the footpath in Church-st., opposite residence of Mr A. 11. Elkin, be raised and formed with suitable materials from the scoria pit, the work to be carried- out to the satisfaction of the Mayor. (7) That footpath in Vanxb.aH Road, opposite residence of Air Mallinson, be raised, formed and made ready for tarring next summer. (S) That the pine trees at Melrose corner, with the exception of those opposite the Roman Catholic Church, be cut down and ■with all logs and stumps be removed and thrown into the nearest gully. (9) That the matter of the drainage in Victoria Eoad, opposite the residence of Mr McMurtree, be deferred. (10) That the watertable in front of the residence of Mr Crapp in Camer-on-street be cleared of gorse and weeds. (11) That the making of a. footpath in Calliope Road, opposite ' the "new Gospel Hall, be deferred for the present. (12) That the request of Mr B. J. Entrican re pathway in Kiwi Road be complied with as follows: That the drain be filled up; that the place for the water table be ploughed, and also the path as soon ns the ground is sufficiently soft, (13) That a firebell be erected at the (corner of Calliope Road and Clarencestreet at a cost not to exceed £30. (14) That the matter of laying a four inch watermain to Stanley Point be deferred on account of the very high price of iron pipes. (15) Re gorse in the borough, Mr Alison having assured the committee that the gorse on his properties is being cut, this committee has no recommendation to make. (16) That the footpath in front of the Grammar School property in Victoria Eoad be lowered to its permanent level, the willow tree removed, and the roadway formed to ita full width, the surplus earth to be used in filling- in the Admiralty Reserve. The report was adopted, with the exception of clauses 15 and 16. ,Wirh regard to clause 13 the matter -was referred to the committee to carry out the work.
Metalling Bonds.—lt was decided to proceed with the metalling of the crown of Beach Road, and also to jßieUil Cheltenham Road,
