WELLINGTON, this day. THE COOK STRAITS CABLE. The Tntanekai has picked up the ends of one of the broken Cook Straits cables. THE DREDGE FOR THE MANUKAU. The Hinemoa made another start today from Westport with the dreca^e. in tow for Onehunga. LANDS FOR SETTLEMENT. The valuable Barnego estate, purchased by the Government from the trustees of the late Mr Patterson, will shortly be offered under the lease in perpetuity clauses of the Lands for Settlement Act. The estate is adjacent to Balclutha, and is splendidly ! adapted for settlement.

A native township between Mangaweka and Taihapu, on the North Island main trunk railway, will in about six weeks time be offered at public auction under the Act. The land, which comprises 94J acres, is sold by the Government, and after dediicting actual expenses, the balance of purchase mone}' is handed over to the native owners. ORCHARD AND GARDEN PESTS BILL. The Minister of Agriculture expresses regret that the Orchard and Garden Pests Bill, which has been before, the Legislature on several occasions, has not become law, inasmuch as in the absence of any law dealing with the subject he is unable to take effective measures to prevent the sale and transit of fruit which ma3 r disseminate the codlin moth and otlter pests among orchards and gardens in fruit growing districts. An act of the kind, the Minister declares, is of vital importance to growers, and he hopes the Bill formerly introduced may pass into law during the coming Bession. TRADES AND LABOUR ORGANISATION. At the conference of trades and labour organisations (Wellington) the Bootmakers and Coachworkers' Unions recommended as an addition to the draft that a committee should be set up by the unions to deal with political questions outside of those directly affecting the interests of workers. The conference then adiourned. The draft constitution will be referred to the various labour organisations. ______
