THE HAWKE'S BAY MEETING.

The Hawke's Bay Jockey Club appear to have had a splendid autumn meeting this year, both from a. racing and financial point of view. Mr S. 11. Gollan's representative, Tire, at last managed to catch the judge's eye, just a short head in front of Tortulla, and the win was well deserved. Tire has always had a good following, but his successes have been few, and so far as this colony is concerned 1 think I am correct in stating that he has previously only won one race, and that was the 'Grand Stand Handicap at the Hawke's Bay Summer Meeting o£ 1898. The winner boasts of aristocratic lineage on both sides. Florence McCarthy (his dam) formed one of the collection of the old defunct X.Z. Stud Company, and she was imported from England to New Zealand by Mr Stead in ISS2. The headings of Tire's pedigree read: Florence MoCarthy_ Medallion I 1 la * * i ~ r§ ~ § ■ 2 ■^ On the second day of the meeting Screw Gun gave another taste of his ability by beating all previous time records in the Hawke's Bay Stakes. The son of Hotchkiss ran over the other three starters at the business end of the journey. If Mr Stead's colt remains sound, it is quite evident he will have a. brilliant turf career. Mr Thos.. Morrin must feel proud at having bred such another high-class equine at his famous stud. In the Nursery Handicap the exAuckland owned filly Kissmary was tested, when she met with easy defeat at the hands of the Hon. J. D.

Ormond's Paphos, a colt by Robinson

Crusoe from Aphrodite. On the second day the Hawke's Bay sportsman again supplied another 2-year-old winner in Phooka. by Robinson Crusoe— Elflock, the filly Kissmary finishing out of place. Old Three Star came out again in his old style at the meeting, putting a couple of welter handicaps to his credit! The aged son of Castor and Vivandiere has proved during his career that like all of the family' he can muster up speed..

"Black Dusl appears to be a promising hurdler. On the first day he won easily under 10.11, but 12.2 on the second day proved too much for him. and the' useful gelding Roller gave the Hon. J. D. Ormoncl a winning turn, jiy-the-bye, this gentlemnn won seven races at the meeting with horses brey by himself. Well, he deserves his success-, for he is a consistent supporter of "the sport of racing A marc to show much improved form at the meeting was Palaver, who won the Railway Stakes in fast time, and also the Biirke Memorial Stakes, for Mr E. J. Watt.
