BOARD OF HEALTH APPOINTED.
At the ordinary meeting of the Harbour Board, held yesterday afternoon, correspondence was received dealing with plague precautions, and the anchoring of vessels in the stream at night. Mr Witheford, the Chairman, gave a summary of the matter as follows:- — At last meeting1 of the Board it will be remembered that a resolution was passed to the effect that the Inclramayo and Indraghiri should be ordered into the stream during the night. This, -with other matters, was communicated to the health officer, and ho sitates that he is of opinion that no steamers or sailing- vessels from infected ports should be allowed to lie alongside wharves during the night, The Indramayo and Indraghiri were accordingly ordered into the stream, and Messrs Heather, lloberton and Co. and T. and S. Morrin and Go. sent a written objection to this course. The masters, also, of the Indramayo and Indraghiri senit protests against their vessels being ordered into the stream, but upon consultation with the health ollicer he informed me, and put In writing, that it was clearly understood that the pratique was granted conditionally upon the vessels' anchoring in the stream during the night. This was communicated to the captains of. the lndranvayo and Indraghiri, and the vessels were removed into the stream without further objections. Since this, however, the health officer has made certain suggestions in relation to hauling vessels off the wharves, and the harbourmaster has reported that he considers it would be sufficient, if vessels were hauled off about twenty 'feet, and had a fender about three feet sis: inches placed aft to catch the vessel and keep her off the wharves, due precautions being taken to prevent raits landing. This arrangement I have recommended the harbourmaster to carry out. The health officer has informed me in relation to the Bound's resolution a.s to formation of Board of Health for the port of Auckland, that he has recommended the Government to appoint the Collector of Customs. Chairman of Ihe Harbour Board and Health Officer, ox-officio. a Board for the port of Auckland, ond I have to-day received a telegram from the Postmaster-General stating that the Chairman of the Harbour Hoard, the Collector of Oils- j toms and Dr. Lewis have been appointed a Board of Health for the port.
A report was received from Dr. Lewis as to the consignment of bones which the Hoard resolved should be landed at Tamaki. but which had since been returned to Sydney by the El in gam He.
The Chairman stated that he hnd declined to allow 25 tons of bones brought from Wellington by the Elingnmite to be landed.
Mr Grmson started that bones were frequently brought by the Northern Company's sstonmers. According to the resolution nnssetl at last meetingl these bones could not be landed, and hfl moved thn.t bones from New Zealand ports be landed. .
This motion lapsed for want of a seconder.
The Chairman stated that ho had appointed an Inspector to srivo his undivided attention to the eleamsfng of lavatories and urinals and all public places on the wharves. These were now being thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.
The Chairman's action was approved.
It was rumoured to-day that an outleer discussed the outbreak in bjaaej (•anue Was al&o unfounded.
