th<r returns compiled' by "Lloyd's Register ot Shipbuilding," it appears that,
excluding warships, there were 538 vessels, | of 1,306,751 tons gross, under construction \ in the United Kingdom at the close of the ! quarter ended 31st December, 1899. The . particulars of the vessels in question are as follow:—Steamers: 450 steel, of 1,286,927 tons; 54 iron, of 10,210 tons; 3 wood and composite, of 330 tons: total, 507 vessels, with 1,297,497 tons. Sailing vessels: 12 steel With 7410 tons; 19 wood and composite, with 1844 tons: total, 31 vessels, with 9254 tons. "The British warships under construction during the same period were 51, with a total displacement of 339,450 tons. They consist of 13 first-class battleships, j with 185,900 tons displacements first-class armoured cruisers with 121,100 tons dis-. placement, one first-class protected cruiser with 11,000 tons displacement, one thirdclass protected cruiser with 2200 tons displacement, six protected sloops with 5880 tons displacement, 17 torpedo boat destroyers with 5420 tons displacement, one Royal yacht with 4700 tons displacement, 13 torpedo boats with 1700 tons displacement, and two river gunboats with, 250] tons displacement.
