DR. LEYDS THRASHED.
Dr. Leytls, thjsdapper little Transvaal a«enl. who is reputed to be responsible for much of the abuse which is hurled at England by the .gutter press of the Continent, and is said to have paid the artists who drew the infamous caricatures of the Queen which appeared in "Le. Hire." and other French journals, is reported to have been the recipient of a sound dog-whipping a fortnight ago when in Brussels. His assailant was an Englishman", who obtained access to the Agent's "room by representing- himself as an emissary of a certain, well-known northern newspaper, the. pro-Boer proclivities of which out-rivalled even those of-the now quite British "Daily Chronicle." As scon as he was alone, with Leycls the visitor produced a batch oi! the French obscenities, remarking1, "I've come to pay you for these, you dirty dog!" and producing his dog whip proceeded to lay into the. Boer with vigour. Leytls endeavoured to get to (he hell to call assistance, but the interviewer was too wily, and rained blows on the tender parts of his victim's anatomy until tingling all over Leycls took refuge under the table, where safe from the whip he shrieked for help. There the Britisher left him and quietly decamped. In his first fury Leyds rushed to the police ofliee and demanded the immediate arrest of his assailant, but on second thoughts decided that- it would suit his. purpose better if no notice were taken of the outrage. So the police dropped the case, but apparently the concierge at Leytls' chambers, who probably had ' been, well tipped by the assailant, to keep his ears shut, told it to his friends, thus frustrating the Transvaal emissary's desire for secrecy. ;
