edin. . , Lieut. Walker, who came down win the Auckland section of the Fourth Contingent, has been promoted to the rank of Captain, in the same corps, over the head of Captain Abbott, who strongly protested, with the result that he'has been given a captaincy in the Fifth Contingent. Lieutenant Thompson has received a commission as .subaltern under Captain Walker. The camp is very busy to-day. Eleven men arrived this morning from Greymouth and went into camp. A sergeant, with ten men and forty horses, left yesterday by the Kotomahnnn, and will be entrained at Lyttelton for Punedin. Every member of the Wellington section of the Fourth Contingent is now provided with a horse, and there are, in addition, several remounts. Thirteen men have been weeded out of the "fighting fifth." Mrs Kennedy MaeDonald is heading a movement on the part of the ladies to give the Fourth Contingent a luncheon before embarkation on Saturday next. Lieut. Currip, of the Wainlm Cavalry, will receive a commission in the Auckland section of the Fifth Contingent. It has not yet been decided who will be captain,- but the following- names are mentioned:—Major Abbott. Lieut. Curvie (who holds ■! captain's certificate), and Capt. O'Brien.
There will be 400 men in the Fourth and 500 men in the Fifth Contingent.
