MATCH AT HAMILTON.
On Saturday last the most interesting game of cricket that has been played in Hamilton this season was witnessed on Sydney Square, when Slade's eleven met and defeated the Arawas, thus winning the caps offered by the Hamilton Association. The Arawas batted first and were all disposed of for 43, the highest seorei being W. Hammond, with nine. In this innings Johnson took three wickets for IS and Campbell five for 13. Slade's in their first attempt made 30, the top scorers being C. Speight and Mayes, with nine apiece. Barton captured two wickets for 12 runs and Gibbons six for 25. In. their second innings the Arawas totalled 25. Six wickets were taken by Johnson for nine runs, Campbell getting two fc>r seven, and Meaehem two for five. Slade's, with 33 to make to win, went to the wickets at about -five minutes to six. Speight and Johnson went first to work, and the dismissal of the former ■without a single run was hailed with delight, Johnson quickly followed him to the pavilion with two to his credit. All hopes were then centred on Browning, but he retired when he reached double figures, and when the score book showed three for 17, four for 17 and five for 24 things began to look exceedingly black for the favourites. There were ten minutes to go and 11 runs were required when F. Johnson went in to bat. Excitement was running pretty high, and Johnson recognising that his only hope was to hit. out did so. He commenced with a single, and three boundary hits for three followed rapidly. It then became a question of time—two minutes to time and a single run required to win. The winning hit was made just on the stroke of. time amidst the greatest enthusiasm, SLide's team thus winning by five wickets. Gibbons took two for nine and Hammond two for seven.
