LOAN AND MERCANTILE AGENCY'S FIRE.
The debris in the ruin of the Loan and Mercantile Agency's store was stni smouldering to-day, the firemen being unable to get at some portions of the fire. A considerable quantity of wool, some undamaged, has been saved, and more will yet be got out. Of the total of £12,250, for which the buildings and stock was insured in the New Zealand Office, only £1500 has been retained by the company. The South.British held risks amounting to £2000, the National of New Zealand £1095, United £1090, North British and Mercantile £1000, Imperial £633, Northern £633. The Commercial Union, Law Union, and Magdeburg also held re-insurances. The Victoria has risks amounting to £1500 from their own clients' policies.
A sale of salvaged maize was held to-day by Mr R. C. Carr. Two lota of 50 bags each were sold at 8/6 per bag, and one lot containing about 3400 bags brought £75. The remaining debris, including flax! iron, etc., will be sold during the course of next week.
