THE VOTING REFORM ACT.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.^
WELLINGTON, this day., V
!An important question- affecting! local bodies has been raised at Eketahuna. A few days ago a, poll was taken on a proposal to rate on. thd unimproved values. The majority o£ those voting were in favour of the. proposal, but as one-third of the. rate* payers on the rolldid not record thelrt votes the chairman declared, the proposal lost. It has since been discover^ ed that, under the Voting Reform. Act, which came into force on the, Ist of January, a poll. on. any proposal .ex-? cepting- for loans shall be. carried o'nl a bare majority of those voting. ,Tht» best legal advice obtainable in Wel« lington is being taken on the subject* as.it is doubted whether the Legislature contemplated bringing unimprov* ed value i>olls under the Voting Re»» form Act. , ;. . -. .
