BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The ordinary meeting- of the Board Of Education was held this afternoon, JlrE. Hobbs (Chairman) presiding-.

Chairman's Jleport.—The". report of the Chairman was read and adopted. Inter alia it stated: — Ahuroa; The half-time arrangements suggested by Committee had been approved. Birkdale: The headteacher had been written to in terms of Chief Inspector's minute regarding selection of pupiljtep.ichur for school. Eden Terrace: Grammar School Board had been informed that the Board has no objection to the calling for tenders for the lease of lots 12—16, Eden Terrace. Gordon: Committee had been furnished with explanation regarding payment of Board's grant in aid ;of school Ji birary1. ■ i Morriiusvilile: 'Kjeacl.teaeher had been informed that list of approved science apparatus will be supplied to him as soon as it is printed. Mount Eden: Committee had been informed in answer to their letter complaining that the paths at the school had not been properly tarred, that the general tarring', etc., at the school has not yet been completed. Papakura Valley: Committee had been furnished with the information asked for regarding holidays, and had been informed that it is not possible to give effect' to their request for all communications to be sent from the Board to teachers to be sent throag-n the Committee. The teacher had ."been granted permission to partition off part of -the shelter shed for a buggy shed subject to Committee's approval. Pirongia: Mr L. P. Shakespear had been referred to the School Commis. sioners for information regarding leasing of reserve at Pirongia. Pokeno: The rules and list of books for school library had been approved. Warkworth: Committee had been furnished with the information asked for regarding the local management, of Huhue school.

The committee that they had forwarded to the Mount Eden School Committee a copy of the architect's report upon alt XI ile b°yS> doset Gilding; that they r had considered the reports of the instructors of the pupil teachers Saturday classes for the quarter ended December 1899, and had no recommendation to make thereon; that they recommended that a holiday be granted to the pupil teachers classes on Saturday, March 17th; that they had considered the reports of nead teachers on staff for the half year ended December 1599, and had taken action thereon where necessary lne report was adopted. Teachers' Selection Committee.— Ihe committee recommended that the following appointments should be authorised by the Board:— Miss E M Robertson to be teacher of Mangawai Leach school; Miss M. J. Dickson to be teacher of Oropi "aided" schoolMiss M. Shaw to be second assistant Paeroa school; Miss L. B. Maxwell to be third assistant Paeroa school; Miss A. The com°mittee reported that they had examined the applications (15) received m answer to advertisement for the head-mastership of the Ponsonbv school, and recommended that the names and qualifications of the undernamed five candidates be submitted (in alphabetical order) to the District School. Committee:—Messrs F P Burton, 8.A., B. Cronin, B.A. J c' Dickinson, A. J. Litten, and' J. r' Whitaker. The committee recommended that the appointment of a first assistant master to the Parnell school be postponed until next meeting, and that the district School Committee be furnished with a complete list of. the applications for their information but not for their selection of any other candidate than one of the five whose names and qualifications have been already submitted to them; that the appointment, of a teacher to- the Manawaru school be postponed until next meeting, and that the Te Aroha West Committee be furnished with an explanation of tho action taken by the Board in regard to the proposed appointment; that the appointment of a teacher to the Waikare "aided" school be postponed until receipt of a promise of free board and residence being provided by'the district; that they knew of no teacher available for the Waimni "aided" school, and that Mr Hewetf -be • informed accordingly; that ■ tins Kaukapakapa School Committee be consulted in regard to the proposed appointment of Miss J. V. Evans as assistant teacher instead of Miss G. A. Tvviname who is not able to resume

teaching at present: that qualified candidates be attached to the Ta Awamutu and Wade schools with a view to their future employment as pupil teachers in those schools.
