OPERATIONS IN ZULULAND.
BRITISH RETIRE.

LONDON, February 15
Advice has been received that the magistrate and Addison's column has reached Lsandhvana, near the western border of Zululand, having retired from Ngutu, in order to avoid a strong Boer division.
On several occasions a small force were nearly surrounded by the enemy.
The Hon. Joseph Chamberlain, Colonial Secretary, stated that the Natal Government could not be responsible for the Zulus maintaining peace since the Boer invasion of native territory belonging to Cape Colony.
The invaded natives would be encouraged and assisted to defend their
lands
Mr Balfour stated that if the tactit compact that the war should be limited to .whites were infringed by the Boers Britain would reconsider her decision respecting the employment of natives and the Sikhs and Goorka regiments pf India.
DURBAN, February 10.
Flying column despatched to Zululand was for protection of Eshowe.
