MEN TO GO INTO CAMP TO-

MORROW

It is expected that Auckland will be able to supply a half company (fifty men) for the Fourth Contingent of New Zealand Rough Riders, as the result of the movement in this city for men, horses and money. More funds are wanted, but as most of the men selected for training- have promised to select, their own horses, the More Men Fund Committee are relieved of that portion of the expense. Of the 120 applicants who came forward at the Drill Shed yesterday 51 promised to provide their horses, and some of them their equipments; and 17 said they would probably be able to arrange for horses or a portion of the cost," or were in other ways suitable men. These (58 volunteers were then selected yesterday afternoon for medical examination, and to go into camp of instruction to-morrow. Brigade Surgeon Lieut.-Col. Dawson, with a staff of medical officers, will conduct the physical examination of the candidates this evening at the Drill Ilnh. The rest of the applicants are to holcl themselves in readiness for the next clny or two, in order that selections may be made from their ranks in the event of some of the chosen ones failing to pass with the necessary tesfs.

Four ollieers have offered their services for the. Contingent: Capt. Abbott (No. 2 Victoria Rifles); ex-Captain P. Chatfield; Lieut. W. Thompson (No. 3 Native Rifles); and Lieut. Geo. H. Walker {Xo. 3 Waikato Mounted Rifles, Kihikihi). ADDITIONAL VOLUNTEERS. The following additional applications for .enlistment in the Contingent wore made to the Selection Committee after we went, to press yesterday afternoon: —

Lieut. George Henry Walker, Kihikihi, 26 years. Two years in No. 3 Waikato .Mounted Rifles, good rider and shot. Will provide horse and £50. The latter will be contributed by the New Zealand Dairy Association.

Grey Holden, Rangiaohia, 21. Will provide horse.

Charles Phair, Opltonui,, 27; two years in No. 1 Waikato Mounted Bifies, first-class shot; will provide £:.'5 and a horse. Walter Gibson, Opitouui, 26; two years in lleretauiigs Mounted Rifles, first-class shot; will give horse or £ 15. Geo. Henderson, Maungakaramea, 29; will give £24 towards expenses. . Geo. E. Morley, Waiuku; will provide horse, saddle and bridle. Joseph Long, Kihikihi, 23; nearly two years in No. '! Waikato Mounted Rifles; will provide horse. Herbert Thompson. Kihikihi, 20; nearly two years in Waikato Mounted Rifles; good rider, first-class shot. Barton Bollond, Cambridge, 25; No. 3 Waikato Rifles; will provide horse. .Tames Mitchell, IJemiiera, 26; no experience; may get a horse.

Alex. Suttie, Onehunga, 31; member of Akarana Rifle Club, very fair shot; will, provide a horse.

John' ,7. Cunningham, King Country, 28; no experience; will provide a horse'or give £20.

Athel Stephenson, Russell, 2.1;. one year in "A" Battery, previously in No. 1 Natives.

.Jas. T. Monaghan, Grey street, 32; two years in Hobson Rifles; fair shot. Thos. Verner, Kihikihi, 21 years; no experience. Wm. John Macmanemin, Auckland, 31; no experience; provides horse. Arthur Paynter, Ngaruawahia, 23; no experience; provides horse. Henry G. Cameron, Kihikihi, 23. ■Chas. Power, Lockerby, Morrinsyille, 32;. two years in Te Aroha Rifles; can provide horse and £10 towards equipment; good rider and shot. Percy Mandeno, 21 years; 8 months in "A" Battery and 8 months in Ohinemuri Rifles; good rifle shot, good rider; probably able to obtain horse.

Fred. J. Storey, Ethel street, Eden Terrace, 23 years; seven years in the Temuka Rifles; good shot.

Henry Lawrence, Ardhhill, 22; 18 months in Ponsonby Navals; fair shot; try to provide horse.

Things were again busy at the Drill Hall to-day in connection with the preparations for the despatch of the, Auckland division of the fourth contingent for South Africa. Mr A. Myers, Mr H. T. Gorrie, Major White and. Capt. Holgate were again in attendance, and a number of men brought their .horses along for inspection. Offers were received to-day for two or three additional men, and the preliminary conditions being satisfactory, seventy-one men will go before the doctors this evening for medical examination.

The names and other particulars of the following additional likely men who volunteered were placed before the Selection Committee to-day:

Edwin W. Monk (son of Mr R. Monk, M.H.R., of Woodhill); age, 32; good rider and shot; will provide horse.

Monk has seen service in Soiith Africa, ' having been in the Matabele Mounted Police at the time of the Jameson Raid, and also in the MatabelelandRelief Force in 1896, under Col.Plumer.

Gerald S. McHardy, Maungaturoto; age, 25; will find horse or money. Wm. Boyle Bradshaw,. Whangarei; age, 28; will provide horse. James A. Colledge, Auckland; age, 20; 3 years' volunteer experience; will provide horse. Mr Fred. Jackson (son of Mr Joshua Jackson) having been selected as one of the seventy to be medically examlined as one of the Rough Riders, his ! friends on the Exchange this morning j subscribed £10 towards the cost of providing his horse. ! Dr. Neill. of the Auckland Hospital, has offered his services as medical I officer to accompany the contingent to South Africa. The offer has been wired to the Premier. THE CAMP. The Selection Committee this morning gave Orders for the following eight. Volunteers, who had • their horses ready, to go into camp at Potter's Paddock, Epsom, and act asa fatigue party at three o'clock this afternoon: Lieutenant G. 11. Walker (Kihikihi). Messrs C. Power. M. Canavan, Grey Holden, B. Bollond, A. Paynter, and J. Sorensen.

Captain Abbott also went out into camp this afternoon. The rest of the selected men will go into camp tomorrow, after passing the medical tests ,this evening. Dr. Dawson and six other medical officers will conduct the physical exams in the Drill Hall evening, commencing at seven o'clock.

Captain Major is in command of the camp of instruction, with Captain Abbott and Lieutenant Walker next...hi command.

The tents for the contingent were being pitched ihis afternoon.

The Selection Committee this morning authorised an expenditure not exceeding 10/- per man per week for rations for the" volunteers in camp, besides an allowance of not more than 12/- per week for each horse, to cover watering and fodder. THE HORSES.

The local Committee have wired to the Waikato papers asking patriotic residents of the Waikato who can provide, good horses for the contingent to eommunjeale with them.

Mr W. T. Woods, of Penrose, has promised to present- a horse to Edwin Fitzgerald, one of . the volunteers, or should he not be selected, to the committee for the use of some other member of the contingent. Of those who are to go before the doctors this evening for medical examination,' about. 55 men will provide their own horses. MILITARY DISPLAY. The selected men of the contingent will, it is expected, be able to. take part in the. grand military display and tournament to be held in the Domain on Saturday, the 24th inst, in aid Of the contingent-funds. The Auckland Volunteer Bearer Company will parade at the Drill Hall next Monday evening, for instruction parade, preparatory to the military display on the 24th inst.
