POLICE COURT.

(Before Mr H. W. Brabant. S.M.) Charge of Theft—A man named W Matthew Leonard was charged with stealing" five bottles of schnapps, valu*d at 15/, the property of some person unknown; also, with assaulting Const. Maher while in the execution of his duty. Prisoner, who was defended by Mr "Collins, was remanded on ba.il till Saturday next, on the application of Sub-Inspector Wilson. Stowaways.—-James -McCarthy, William Smith. Ernest Stanton. Jeremiah Haves, Thomas James, and Titus A. Plavanesen pleaded guilty to having travelled by the s.s. Elingamite from Sydney without paying the fare, &i 15/, and with intent to a\« id payment thereof. A'fine of £3, in default one month's hard labour, was imposed in =ach ease. Maintenance Cases.—John Bryant was sentenced to one month's hard labour for disobedience of an order Sated June 6th, 1809. Defendant was allowed one week in which to pay tip - the arrears (£7). — Joseph Western, also charged with failing to obey an order, was sentenced to one month, warrant to be suspended for one week to allow defendant to pay up. the arrears (£5 5/).—Two charges against Charles Bernard Weber, oi failing- to maintain his wife and children, were dismissed. Mr Brokfield appeared for complainant and Mr Napier for the defence.—Edwin Davey was ordered to pay 6/G a week in support-of his mother. ■ The licensing: case Police v. Evans, in which the defendant. Bridget Evans, licensee of Gleeson's Hotel, was charged with having permitted drunk* enness on her licensed premises, occupied the attention of the Police Court till after five o'clock last evening. , Several witnesses were called for the defence with a view of showing- that the alleged drunkenness was really sickness, that the man had nothing1 stronger than soda water while in defendant's hotel. The case was eventually adjourned till this afternoon, when Mr Brabant. R.M. announced that he would give judgment on Saturday.
