THE WATER SUPPLY.

WESTERN SPRINGS VISITED.' 7j

His Worship the Mayor, accompanied by Councillor Kidd, Chairman of the Water Committee, the Waterworks Engineer, and Mr Knig-ht, visited th© Western Springs on Saturday afternoon to see whether it was at all possible -to' augment the supply there, but the results were not satisfactory. They then went on to Canty's and Henderson's streams, at this latter the flow was not more than threequarters of a million. The former (that- is Canty's) could not gauged until this morning, as the water was until the overflow at Pirritt's Darn, but the information gained shows the wisdom of the Council in refusing to commence.operations without the proper data upon which to work. Present indications seems to suggest that there will not be a sufficient quantity in the two streams, combined to give the city what it wants,, notwithstanding the number of assurances from supposed experts and others that there was a. superabundance, in the I driest season. But. as Mr It. L. Mesi tayer will, arrive on Wednesday next, the Council will very soon be able To i determine where to look for a supply, but present appearances seem to favour Nihotapu.. If that is determined upon, then, immediate steps will ho doubt be taken to prosectite the work Iso as to have, the supply ready for next i summer. . , They also visited the Waikumeto Cemetery; the small chapel building I there showing evidences of the founda- ! tion being faulty. The Council's work-. | men are undermining1 the walls and placing iron tie rods through the buildings; another staff of men are busy putting in the pegs for a number of new sections. The ground under Mr Bond is getting into very much, better condition, and when the season for planting comes son, and the Scenery Conservation Society Committee get to work it will no doubt have an altered appearance very much for the better. .
