'Telegrams in, the Cape "Times'* state that on January 9 an attempt Avas made by a.party of Boers to take a position which threatened to cut off our communication with Rensbergy but was frustrated by a squadron of New Zealanders under Major Robin. The latter made a race for., it, and got. there first, then flred a volley which made the enemy retreat towards Colesberg.. • ■ According to the other telegram the contingent were repeatedly under fire in the second week in January, but no casualties. • ; ■.■ This mail does not bring particulars of the engagement at Siingersfontein, for which the New Zealanders were commended.
