MR T. MACKENZIE RETIRES.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
DUNEDIN, Friday.
Mr Thomas Mackenzie last night announced his retirement as a candidate for Clutha. He said it was evident the writs would be issued in a day or so, before he could qualify. He referred to the impropriety of disqualifying.'citizens who went abroad in the interests of the country. Personally, he had never severed his connection with the colony. He had left his five boys here, and had never formed a home abroad, and in his absence had continued to pay about £50 a year in taxation. A person who committed the vilest crime could .enrol as an elector immediately he'gOtiout of gaol, and become qualified to stand for Parliament, ■ but a person who went abroad.in the'interest of his adopted country was disfranchised. If he remained in the colony he would certainly contest some seat, probably at some by-election. A motion expressing full confidence in Mr Mackenzie and regret at his retirement was carried unanimously.
