DEATH OF SIR W. P- SYMONS.
LONDON, October 27.
The War Office, explains tha.t the wounded were left at Dundee in care of British doctors in order to avoid the risks of a long march.
Many of the Boers fired on the British ambulance waggons. The Boers implored the British for admission to the English ambulances.
The steamers Trojan and Spartan have been chartered as hospital ships for South Africa.
Lady Randolph Chirrchill has initiated a fund with a view to raising £3000 for the purchase of an AngloAmerican hospital ship. General Joubert has informed General White of the death, of Sir W. P. Symons. When the news was announced in the House of Commons the members uncovered.
[Sir W. F. Symons, whose gallant defeat of the Boers at Gleneoe earned for him the rank of major-general, which he did not live long- to enjoy, had a distinguished career in the army. He took part in the Zulu war, being1 at the time a regimental officer in the illfated 24th. In the recent fighting on 'he north-west Indian frontier he distinguished himself as commander of "he first division of the Tirah ExpediLionary Force, and his training has been such as to give him experience of fhe utmost value in such a war as that now proceeding.!] i
