THE GOLDFIELDS

KUKANUI CALEDONIAN. Our Thames correspondent wires that no appeal has been lodged in the case recently decided by Mr Bush in \ favour of the tributers. The time expired yesterday. The Tributers interested in the other eases are convening a meeting" for Monday for the pur- I pose oJ' discussing whether they | should take further action. CHELMSFORD. The manager of this company's mine, which is situated in the Upper ' Tairua district, has forwarded the fol- I lowing- report to the directors in Auck- ■ land:—"The water-race has been I surveyed, the levels taken, and pegged fl readjr for excavation. A battery site ;1 of five acres has also been surveyed f: and pegged out. With reference to I . the development of the mine, I have to report that the 40 feet crosscut has 1 been advanced to the hangingwall of 1 the No. 2 lode, and shows a good solid body of high grade ore, 3feet 6 inches in thickness. The stone in parts shows visible go^d and sulphide of silver. This is an important development, as at this point the lode measures 14 inches at the outcrop, and proves the lode to have more than doubled itself in width in its downward course. The new low level has been started 126 feet from the No. 2 : find, and when advanced will give 52 feet of backs at the No. 2 find on No. I 1 lode, or say a total of 82 feet at No. 1 find on No. 2 lode. This bus been driven 36 feet, and a strong body of highly payable ore, 4 feet wide, has been intersected at the mouth of the tunnel, which I consider to be the No, 1 lode. The approach to this level has been driven in a south-easterly direction, and the lode strikes south by south west. This will necessitate driving some distance before picking up the lode. The drive has been brought round in a southerly direction, and I think it would be advisable to drive another 20 feet on this course, and put in two short crosscuts east and west. This will define the exact position of the lode and of any others that may exi*i to the eastward. I ;| have made a very important find on § the extended property. Some 4GOO feet ; from our present workings I discovered the outcorp of a lode about 3 feet wide, and judging from the characteristics of the ore I should take it to be a continuance of our reef system. It shows visible gold in parts, , and it is well marked with sulphklo of silver. Of coures it is impossible to give any idea as to the size or permanency of. the lode: this can only W j ascertained by development. Take:* j altogether this find is of important, jas it proves the continuity of the low lin a southerly direction, and to extend some considerable distance from our present workings. "With reference to the water-race, I find that 1M chains of fluming will be required ami 600 feet of piping. This will give us|; a perpendicular fall of 330 feet. Samples of the different lodes were on view to-day at Mr F. A. Whites office and it has been decided that S| |of the directors shall visit the mine next week.
