ELECTION NOTES.
THE MANUKAU SEAT.
Mr J. E. Taylor, a candidate for the Manukau seat, gave a political Address in the Epsom Hall last night. There was a fair attendance. Mr E. W. Burton presided. The speaker said he was anon party man, but if a vote of want of confidence was proposed, he would vote against the present Government. He believed in government for the people by the people, and he thought the Legislative Council should be elected by the people. He thought the question of federation should be , referred to the people. He considered there were about 20 men in the House who were elected by minorities. With regard to the liquor traffic he thought that a three-fifths majority was too 1 large to cancel licenses, as the same majority was necessary to restore them. A majority of 55 to 45 in favour of no liccice should be sufficient to obtain "no-license." He did not approve of the Government, buying up. estates.
At the close Mr Taylor answered n.y number of questions including several g re old age pensions put to him by inmates from the Costley Home. In reply he said that he would not lower the pension age, and that* he objected to the Old Age Pension Act be- ■ ing made a medium for children shifting the burden of keeping their parents on to the State.
Mr Taylor said he would go to the poll, and on the motion of Mr Conoily he was accorded a vote of thanks • and confidence.
