WAIKATO NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

"SWEET LAVENDER."

In the Volunteer Hall on Tuesday eveningl the Hamilton Comedy Company produced Pinero's masterpiece

"'Sweet Lavender," and in spite of the fact that the town has been fairly looted by theatrical companies during the past week or two the amateurs were greeted with an overflowing- and delightfully enthusiastic audience. The cast- of characters was a most happy one. Sir well had the piece been rehearsed that there was not the slightest hitch right through, and the position of prompter was indeed a sinecure. The parts were allotted as follows:-— Mr Geoffrey Wedderburn (of Wedderburn, Green a.nd Hoskett, bankers, Barnchester), Mr W. Dey; Clement ITale (his adopted son, studying- for the bar), Mr Melville H. Quick; Dr. Delaney (a fashionable physician), Mr T. Jolly; Dick Phenyl (a barrister), Mr A. E. Manning-; Horace Bream (a young1 American), Dr. A. Seymour Brewis: Mr Maw (a. solipitor), Mr J. McCrae; Mr Bulger (hairdresser), Mr C. Speight;'Mrs Gilfillan (a widow, Mr Weclderburn's sister), Mrs Brewis; Minnie (her daughter), Miss A. Holloway; 'Ruth Rolt (housekeeper and laundress at Dick Phenyl's chambers). Miss Gillespie; Lavender (her daughter), Miss Jennie Rees. Mr Manning, as Dick Phenyl, fairly excelled himself, while Mr Jolly, as Dr. Dela.ney, and Dr. Brewis, as Horace Bream, come next in order of merit. Miss Holloway, as Minnie, infused n lot. of life and vig-otir into her part and was frequently applauded. The title role was taken by Miss Jennie Rees, of Auckland, who looked exceedingly pretty and played her part in a most sympathetic manner. The other parts were all well sustained, and the piece was, without doubt. Hie most successful the company hns yet attempted "Dandy Dick" included. Tt is understood that "Sweet Lavender" will be reproduced on one of the show nig-hts in October. About £25 was taken in all.
