BANJO CLUB'S CONCERT.
There was a crowded audience at the Opera House lnst evening-, when the Auckland Banjo, Guitar and Mandolin Club gave the first concert of their 1899-1900 season. A capital programme was provided and successfully carried out. Under the directorship of Mr A. Towsey the Club played the "Novar Grand March," the entr'acte "Rosette," a Spanish "Serenade" and the "Rialto Polka,'' winning well-deserved applause at the close of every item. Mrs George Read's fine voice was heard to advantage in "The Land of Nod" and "Cannencita," for both of which she was deservedly encored. The other vocalists were Mr St. La\irence Toner, who sang "The Deathless Army" and "Off to Philadelphia," and Mr Percy Blackmail, whose comic songs, "Give Him My Kind Regards" "And It's Not for Me" caused great merriment. Mr YVynyard-Joss contributed a mandolin solo in good style, and Miss Rita Pos.senni.skie, a young violinist, p]:iycd Wienia weld's "Second Mazurka" in very creditable fashion, winning loud applause. A banjo solo. "Infantry March,'" was artistically given by Mr J. Lawrence, who, with Mr H. .Fountain, also appeared in a banjo duet, "Queen of Diamonds." The "Estudiantina Quintette" contributed enjoyable items, besides supplying the music for the gavotte, charmingly danced in Court costume by Misses Duicie and May Dunningham, and Messrs Cecil Hawkins and Thos. Dunningham. The stage directions were under the direction of Miss Mcllhone, and reflected great credit on that young lady's artistic taste. Mr S. E. Colenjan was an efficient stage manager, nnd the general arrangements were adequately attended to by Mr J. D. Crawford, the business manager.
