The distress is terrible, food supplies are inadequate and liable to be com* mandereed. A headlong exodus is going on. Martial law exists, as hostility iim feared. The Transvaal has sent 1,500,ppa« rounds of Mauser ammunition to Bloemfontein. It is believed that a majority of the Raad at a secret sitting demanded a declaration of the country's independence. Many talk of rushing to the Natal J frontier. . A German corps of 900 men has been ; iJ formed in Johannesburg in favour of : ;fj the Boers. The Johannesburg train has thrice been searched going to Durban. The Simmer and Jack mine on the ■Rand has also been searched for arms with fruitless results. The arrest of Mr Pakeman, editor of the Transvaal "Leader," has created an immense sensation. The prosecutor;™ says the charge against Mr PakemaM| will likely be reduced to a press™ offence. A hundred warrants have been issued against Uitlander leaders.
