Prior and Fisher, for assault on a young woman, were sentenced to two Years" imprisonment. Coogan and Henry are being re-tried in the Ethel "ringing-™" case, but this time the Ashburton charge is being taken. HOKITIKA. Monday. . The Supreme Court opened to-day, before Judge Denniston. There were only two criminal cases, Ryan and Levy, charged with manslaughter, and a Chinaman, charged with breaking and entering. The grand jury brought in true bills in each case. The manslaughter case occupied the Court till ten to-night. The Judge held that the jury could not bring *i verdict of guilty of assault'on the indictment before the Court. The case depended on whether the assault contributed to death. Two doctors, for the defence, contradict, two doctors for the prosecution. The jury, after ihalf-an-hour's retirement, acquitted the accuised, who were discharged | from custody.
