ONEHUNGA IMPROVEMENTS.

At the Onehunga Borough Council meeting last night the Streets Com. mittee presented the following report j re suggested improvements in the j Borough:— I Gas Lamps,—Recognising the necessity of the better lighting- of the side streets of the Borough your committee recommend that the following- additional lamps be erected: —One at cor- | ncr of Norman's Hill and Arthur-st., i one at corner of Green Hill-st. and i Norman's Hill, one at corner of Quad- , rant Road and Arthur-st., one at cor|ner of Victoria-st. and Grey-st., one at corner of Green Hill and Selwyn-st. Footpaths. —Your Commitee would also recommend that the following street improvements be taken in hand viz.:—A footpath from Beattie's corner to Symonds'st. (north side), to be formed, tarred and sanded. ContinuaI tion of footpath up Norman's Hill from junction of Manukau Road to Green Hill-st. Continuation of foot- ! path in Selwyn-st. from Green Hill-st, j Ito Trafalgar-st (west side). Your Committee would also recommend that the making of the foot- ' path from the junction of Queen-street \to its intersection with Victoria-st. j (along- Mount Smart Eoad) for which tenders were recently called be done by clay labour. i Your Committee also recommend the i extension of the footpath from the I ! corner of Trafalgar-st. on the east i side up Queeu-st. to the boundary I road at Mt. Smart Koad. j That the Auckland Road from cor- | ncr of Trafalgar-st. to Borough boundary be improved on the east side. Extension of footpath in Church-st. from Alfred-st, to railway crossing at Te Papapa. Your Committee have also under consideration a drainage scheme for the Borough, and also the extension of | the water system to various places throughout the town. Mr Bradley said the report seemed a large order, but the work was necessary, especially the street lamps. Mr Stoupe asked if the Streets Committee had received the loan voted by the ratepayers a little time ago. Mr Howe smilingly remarked that the various works ought to be carried out as suggested by the Committee. Owing to the influx of population many new houses had been erected of late in side streets, and the residents ought to have good footpaths and plenty of light. As much of the work was half done its completion would not be as expensive as some might Mr Lalctag said now that they were on the «ye of an election it, was discovered that people wanted more light (which was quite true, and on more aubiccts than their streets), also new footpaths, with a drainage scheme thrown in. He moved that the report be referred back to the Streets Committee for a probable estimate> of^the cost of each job recommended to be T°he C Chairman'saia the Council had recently decided that certain work now recommended by the Streets Committee was unnecessary. The motion was seconded by Mr Tlowe and agreed to.
