SCENERY PRESERVATION.

A meeting1 of the Committee of the Auckland Scenery Preservation Society was held at the Municipal Chambers yesterday afternoon, Dr. J. L. Campbell presiding-. Mr J. Burtt drew attention to the destruction of nikau palms and ferns throug-h their use by churches, societies and individuals for decorative purposes. The Chairman said that while the Committee had no speciiic power in these matters they might use their moral influence abd offer suggestions in the way of preventing the destruction referred to. Messrs J. Burtt, E. W. Payton and A. J. Allom were appointed a sub-com-mittee to consider and report as to what steps, if any, should be taken in the matter of re-erection of the Churton obelisk. The Mayor handed in a report from Mr W. Goldie giving details as to improvements in the Albert Park, the total cost being- set down as £708 14/. A sub-committee consisting of Dr. Purchas, Prof. Thomas, Messrs J. Russell, J. Burtt, J. Cheeseruan and D. Hay was appointed to consider the matter. A sub-commit-tee was also set up to offer suggestions to the City Council as to the most desirable kinds of ti'ees for street-planting, the streets where treeplanting was necessary, and also as to tree-planting on Arbor Day. The meeting discussed the matter of the destruction of the various volcanic hills around Auckland by the removal of scoria ash, and a committee consisting of Dr. Campbell, Messrs Allom, W. Berry, J. H. Upton and P. Dignan was set up to inquire as to what action might be taken to prevent the disfiguration of these hills.
