THE BUTCHERS' DISPUTE

FINDING OF THE BOARD

The Auckland Board of Conciliation met this afternoon at the Supreme Court buildings, the Rev. A. 11. Collins presiding, in order to make known its recommendations in the dispute between the Auckland Butchers' Union and the Master Butchers' Association.

The Chairman read the following recommendations, which had been arrived at by the Board (which, however, were tentative and subject to modifications if such could be agreed on moitually by the disputing- parties):

Clause 1: That the hours of labour for all butchers shall be 01J per week in the summer months, and CCijJ- frn week in the winter months, divided <as follows: — Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, C a.m. to 5.30 p.m.; Wednesday, 6 to 1; Friday, 6 to 6 during the months of May toOctober, inelujsive, and G a.m. to 7 p.m. during the months of November, to April, inclusive; Saturdays, 0 a.m. to 9 p.m. in winter; and 0 a.m. to 10 p.m. from November to April. The time allowed for meals shall be one hour and a half on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; half an hour on Wednesday; ami two hours and a half on Saturday. Overtime shall be paid after these hours at the rate of 1/ per hour up to 12 p.m., and after 12 p.m. 2/ per hour. Boys and youths shall be paid overtime at the rate of Gd per hour up to 12 p.m., and 1/ per hour after 12 p.m. All Sunday labour shall be paid at the rate of double time, excepting in the case of slaughtermen, who, when engaged in killing on Sundays, shall receive an equivalent in time on Saturday.

Clause 2: That the minimum rate of wages shall be as follows:—Foreman,

£3 per week; first shopmen, whose work is confined to the shop, £2 3/ per, week; small goodsmen (which shall mean only men who are continually employed in the manufacture of small goods, and shall not include boys learning the trade), £2 2/; second shopmen, £2; assistants, £1 15/.

Clause 3. —That boys going to the trade shall receive, per week. 15/ up to 10 years of age; 17 years, 17/6; IS years. 20/: 19 years, 22/fi; 20/ years, 25/; 21 years, 30/. Certificate of age shall be furnished by the Auckland Butchers' Union.

Clause 4. —That the wage of beefearters shall be: One or two-horse carts, £2 2/; two or three-horse waggons, £2 5/; four-horse waggons, £2 10/.

Clause 5. —That the wage for salters and cellarmen shall lie: First hand, £2 5/; second hand, £2 2/; assistants, £ 1 15/. The hours to be the same as for shop-hands.

Clause G. —That the -wage of boners shall be: First hand, £2 2/; second hand, £2. The hours shall be the same as shop-hands.

Clause 7. —That all wages shall be paid in full. Arrangements may be mutually agreed upon for board and lodgings, or either.

Clause S.—That the rate of wages for slaughtermen shall be as follows:—Foreman £3; first slaughterman, £2 10/: second slaughterman, £2 2/; boys, same rates as in clause 3. All butchers killing at the rate of six beasts, 60 calves, sheep, etc., per week, and over, shall pay their slaughtermen £2 10/ per week. Butchers killing less than this number shall pay £2 2/ per week. When there is Sunday killing time to be taken on Saturday as an equivalent. Hours and overtime as provided in clause 1, and overtime after these hours at the rate of 1/ per hour.

Clause 9.—That the wage of hawking carters shall be £2 per week; firstclass adult delivery carters, £2 2/ per week; and second-class, £1 17/.

Clause 10. —The above rates of wages shall in every instance be the mini-

mum.

Clause 11. —In all eases of an employee leaving or an employer discharging his hands, one week's notice to be given.

Clause 12. —This agreement- shall come into force on October 2nd, 1599, and shall continue in force till October Ist, 1900. The penalty for breach by cither party shall be any sum not exceeding £ 10.

The recommendations were being1 discussed when we went to press.
