NEWTON GOSPEL MISSION

Special services were conducted by the above in the Foresters' Hall yesterday. At 11 a.m. the Superintendent gave an address on the text "The Word of the Lord is Tried," Psalm xviii. 30, showing that although the Bible has been tried by all the combined powers of the devil it was still the mightiest factor employed in building up and in forstering the thought and life of the nation. No other agency to-day exerted a greater influence in leading man to power and glory. Though subject to more criticism, ridicule and vulgarity than any other book, still it was more powerful and influential than ever. Tn the afternoon Rawei, the Maori Evangelist, gave a stirring address on the "Woman of Samaria," dealing with her life, her conversion, and her influence in leading others to Christ. He set forth the noble aims, purposes and aspirations which should govern all Christian lives. All men could in some way or other exert an influence in the community which would be the means of leading souls to the Saviour. Thi> could be done in manifold ways, but it should be the purpose of all who were endeavouring to become Christlike in spirit and holy in walk and conversation. Without such a purpose it was impossible to serve Jesus. In the evening Rawei also conducted the sei'vice, and gave a powerful address on the "Ten Virgins." The wisdom of Keing prepared for the coming of the Lord nnd of talcing Christ now was fully demonstrated to the audience. The services were well attended, at night the large building- was well seated, being nearly full of earnest listeners. The music Was rendered by n large choir newly organised, white Miss Cullens officiated at the organ, and Mrs Griffiths at the piano. The hnlf yearly ten and public meeting tafces place otj Wednesday.
