THE 'FRISCO MAIL.
THE PARLIAMENTARY JOKE.
MR McCULLOUGH'S EXPLANATION,
The Mayor of Auckland, Mr Davici Goldie, has received the following telegram from Mr J. .T. Holland, M.H.It., regarding the Frisco mail service "scare" and last week's telegram from the Hon. W. McCullough to the Mayor.
"Whole thing a vile joke. Regret you have been victimised by our overzealous member of the Upper House, who ought to have seen through the whole thing. Holland."
The Horn Mr McCullough, however, takes the other side and says the matter is no joke at all. He has wired as follows to the Mayor of Auckland:
"Your prompt action completely frustrated schemes enemies of Auckland, directed attention as nothing I would to earnestness citizens in matter mail conveniences, and has consolidated Auckland provincial members. Attempt to pass matter off as joke is too transparent; was resorted to to cover defeat. There is great deal more ■in matter than meets the e.yo. Those ' who heard speeches of Miller and Duthic have no reason to doubt seriousness of position. Tt is no question of Government policy. Resolution* possession of House and majority could amend in spite of Government. Premier admits your wire caused him report progress, which with attention now directed practically kills proposals as submitted. Regret if my action has caused you annoyance. Wm. McCullough."*
