CRIMINAL SITTINGS

A new common jury was sworn in this morning.
ALLEGED ATTEMPT TO ROB A NEW TRIAL, . '
Alfred O'Donnell, a young man, was indicted that on May 24 last, at Maropm, near Dargaville, ihe did assault ■one Kihipene Ropata, a Maori, with intent to rob.
O'Donnell was before the Court last week, and after a trial extending1 over a day and a-half, the jury failed to agree on a yerdict and were discharged. Mr W. J. Napier appeared for accused.
The Maori woman had a refreshment booth at some races at Maropm on Queen's Birthday. Her. takings amounted to some £7 14/10. She saw the accused at the racecourse and he heard jingling of money in her pocket. Accused told her he would have the money. In the evening-, after the races, the Maori gave her takings over to the clerk at Mitchelson Brothers' for safety. It was alleged by the Maori that when she was going home to her whare in the evening accused jumped from behind a puriri tree, knocked her down and rifled her pocket; and she was also kicked on the forehead by accused. The Maori woman escaped, and accused was chased by two Maoris.
His Honor intimated the case was likely to last all day, and the jury and witnesses were discharged until tomorrow morning.
Rihipene Bopata gave her evidence in English.

Moody and Mr .Meyer, and accounts of the doings in the various churches. One page above others in the "Work* er" we would specially recommend is entitled "Rescuing the Perishing; or. Leaves from My Notebook," by Sister Francis. Her noble work in connee« tion with the Door of Hope is known and appreciated by many, and ns an appeal ds made for more funds to carry on her mission we trust our reader! will bear this in mind and send along* their contributions either direct to the Door of Hope or to the office of thd "Christian Worker." •
