Nominations for the annual election of councillors at Onehunga closed at noon to-day. The following nominations were made: — Messrs James Nixon, James J. Shaldrick, John D. Jackson, William H. Edwards, George Vause, Charles V. Hill, and Mrs Elizabeth Yates. The three retiring members of the Council are Messrs J. Laking, J. J. Shaldrick, and Mr C. V. Hill. Mr Laking is not seeking re-election.
Last night Dr. Kenny delivered the first of a series of lectures in the Anglican stone schoolroom at Onehunga, entitled "Homely talks for homely people." Canon Haselden presided, and the large audience testified their appreciation with a hearty vote of thanks, amidst loud applause. Local
On Friday evening, September 1, at the Masonic Hall, Otahuhut, an association was formed for the purpose of organising the efforts of the. electors of Franklin with a view to carrying the no-license vote at the licensing poll in December" next. The Rev. S. Lawry and Mr J. E. Taylor were present by invitation, and Mr Taylor was called upon to preside. The Eev. D. J. Steele was elected president, Mr McLeod secretary, Mr John Andrew treasurer; vice-presi-dents, Mr C. Bailey, Mr E. Allen, Mr J. Johnston, the Rev. Mr Fussell, and Mr A. Douglas. A working committee was also formed, and sub-com-mittees for the distribution of literature and for organising public ir-eet-ino-s. The society was named North Franklin No-License Association.
Hall and Perkins will sell Wednesday week, for Mr T. Jackson, who is leaving Avondale for a large Waikato homestead, the whole of his valuable catalogue of live and dead stock and household furniture, etc.
