LACROSSE.
The match between the Iroquois and the Pawnees, at the Domain, on Saturday, proved full of interest, the game being contested in the mosft spirited manner. Pawnees eventually Avon by 5 goals to 3.
Although much bright play was shoAvn by individual members on both sides, yet the members of the PaAvnee team undoubtedly displayed more combination, this being especially, noticeable in the third spell of play. The game, hoAvever, must be ranked as one of the best played this season. In the contest betAveen the Mohawks and Dakotahs a very different state of affairs preA'ailed. The former team was very weak on the attack, Avhile their defence proved far from sound, goal after goal being registered against them. At half-time the Dakotah men had put up a tally of 4 goals to 1, and in the later^stages of the game they kept up an incessant and very successful fusillade, no less than 7 more goals being scored. This big win of 11 goals to 1 by the Dakatohs Avas largely brought about by the excellent shooting of M. Ward, who put the ball between the posts no less than six times. This player undoubtedly is a good man on the attack, the majority of his shots being very accurate. Brown also did well with three goals to his credit, Avhile Cook and Patterson .had one each. The MohaAvks played, however, one man short, the one goal achieved being due to the agency of Richardson, who took a pass from Morrin and shot a goal immediately after the face-off. OAving to the obvious disparity between the teams the .game Avas Avithout much interest hoAvever.
The committee has done well in changing- the names of the competing teams. The former style of alphabetical nomenclature showed a conspicuous want of originality, but now the men Avill be known by the names of some of the more noted Indian tribes among Avhorn the game originated. As these teams may form thr*. nucleus of future clubs it is well to label them Avith distinctive names instead of merely dubbing them A, B, C, and D, and this accordingly has been done.
The Lacrosse contributor to the Sydney "Referee" Avrites:—A recent issue of the "NeAv Zealand Graphic," kindly forwarded by some friend Avho does not disclose his identity, contains a capital portrait of members of the Auckland Lacrosse Association, an organisation formed last May. By the way, I am indeed pleased to see the pastime is going ahead strongly in Auckland. Let us hope we shall at no distant period be able to meet our brethren across the Tasman Sea in an intercolonial match.
