The Magistrate's Court was occupied during a portion of .yesterday afternon hearing evidence m a case Wingate and Co. v. David Lundou, of Fort-street. The- claim was for Lo 12/ balance of account said to be due for an iron fence sold a.nd delivered. ' Mr F- W. Williamson appeared for plaintiffs, and Mr J. ULundon for defendant. The sum of £1 11/ was paid into Court. lne amount charged for the fence was £15, defendant had paid £9 8/, ana the amount in dispute was the costs of gates, stays? locks, etc. Further evidence in the case was heard before Mr H. W. Brabant, S.M., this morning. A non suit was entered, each party to pay its own costs. Mr Metin (Professor of History and Economics in one of the Paris Colleges) and Madame Metin have arrived at Wellington on a visit to New Zealand, under the direction of the French authorities, as critics and observers of the national and social life of the people, with the object of advising the State and municipal bodies upon phases of instruction or government which might prove useful or helpful to the Republic's social or educational life. The church at Wellsford and Mr Lawrance's outbuildings were burned down during Thursday night. There was no insurance on the buildings. A Dunedin telegram states that as the result of high tides and heavy southerly gales, an extensive lagoon was formed yesterday near the sandhills on Ocean Beach, which threatened to flood St. Kilda again. The scrub fences erected by the Domain Board, by causing the sand to collect about them, served- to keep back the water. The annual meeting of shareholders of the Auckland Co-operative Boot and Shoe Company (Limted), which was to have been held last night, -was adjourned until next Friday evening at half-past seven, as there was not a quorum of shareholders present. We have already published the report a.nd balance sheet.

Dr. Laishley will deliver an address at the next meeting of the Australasian Federal League in the Harbour Board long room on Monday evening. Dr. Laishley will be replied to by Mr E. W. Burton, who we understand has been selected by the Council. An interesting and instructive discussion should be the result. The meeting as usual is a public one, and discussion is invited. The League's first publication is now in the hands of Chainpaloup and Cooper for free distribution.

A concert tendered to Mr T. C. Webb, A.T.C.L., by Beresford-street Congregational Church choir, will take place on Wednesday next in St. James' Hall," Wellington-street. The programme published elsewhere in this impression is a choice one.

In this issue of the "Star" Mr R. W. Gallagher, wholesale grocer, Vic-toria-street West, issues an important price list to his customers and the general public. It will no doubt be perused by the thrifty housekeepers of Auckland.

The excellent programme prepared for the annual concert in aid of the funds of the Grey Lynn Volunteer Fire Brigade appears in this issue. The concert takes place in St. George's Hall next Friday evening.

The annual re-union of the Onehunga "Musical Society was held lastnight and proved a brilliant success. A good programme of vocal and instrumental items was interspersed with dances. The casket scene from the "Merchant of Venice" was creditably performed by Miss Dawson and Mr Hardy. A first-class supper was provided by lady members of the committee. Miss Mulkire and Mr Hardy acted as accompanists, and Mr E. Higgins was M.C.

A first-class concert was held in the Oddfellows' Hall, Howick, on Wednesday night in aid of a resident of the village, Mr P. Smith, a married man with a large young family, who had been laid up with a bad leg for some months past. Monsignor Macdonald presided, and addressed the large audience with one of those cheerful and kindly speeches- for which he is so noted and popular. A very full programme was submitted to an appreciative assembly, and well rendered by the Misses Myles, Roberts, Olphert, and Andrews, Messrs Absolum, Bower, Harris, Rainger, Trice, Teague, , and Brenan. The music was supplied by Miss A. Mulkire and Mr Wm. Brady. After the concert a dance was greatly enjoyed. . We understand the concert will result in £20 being handed to Mr Smith.

The North Shore footballers conclude their victorious season with a social given by the lady supporters of the club. During the evening P. Gerrard (best back) and E. Scott (best forward) were presented with handsome gold medals amidst great applause. W. Nicholson, W. Pitt, and P. Walsh were also announced as winners of trophies, to be given at a future date.

The Tonson Garlick Company has just received from His • Excellency, Earl of.Ranfurly, an order from Wellington to supply carpets similar to those supplied to Government House here, which bears testimony to the excellent manner the Company handled that particular work.
