VOLUNTEER NOTES.

The annual social of the Ponsonby Naval Artillery, which was held last evening in St. Benedict's Hail, met. with the success which its energetic, promoters undoubtedly deserved, it; was fortunate that a hall so spacious | had been chosen, for no less than IJ7 i couples took part in the opening grand march. This pretty ceremony took place shortly after eight o clock, Lieut.-Commander Patterson and has ! partner leading the procession. The white uniform of the navals set off the gay colours worn by the ladies, and the elaborate decorations, with flags of all nations draped from walls to ceiling, helped to make the scene a brilliant one. The decorations were really very fine, and must have cost the committee and others who assisted them much time and trouble. The striking success achieved, however, was no doubt ample compensation for their labour of love. The arrangements made in connection with the, dance were most complete, and every- \ one spent a very enjoyable evening.; P O'sW G Morgan, C. Gavan, O. Totman and Gunner Pollard carried out j thp duties of M.C.'s in an efficient, manner and the Druids' String Band supplied admirable music. The caterSgwM in the hands of K. ?«*«.«£ ; left nothing to be desired. Among \ the invited'guests were Lieut.-Colonel Banks, Officer Commanding the Auck- i land District; Captain McKenzie, R.A., I of the No. 1 Service Corps; Captain Grant. District Adjutant; Captain Miller formerly in command of the Ponsonby Navals; Sergt.-Majors Carpenter, Eowles, and Shaw, and several of the non-commissioned officers of the Permanent Artillery and the No. 1 Battalion of Volunteers. For_ the great success achieved the credit is largely due to the committee, who were indefatigable in their efforts to make the social worthy of the reputation of this long-established and deservedly popular'corps. The members of the committee were: Chief P.O.'s .T Spinley, G. E. Spinley; P.O.'s W. J. Morgan, C. T. Gavan, H. Taylor, F. R. Thompson, O. Totman; Gunners F. Martin and C. Pollard. It should be mentioned that the flags used to decorate the hall were lent for the occasion by Mr A. B. Donald.
