VOLUNTEER NOTES.
The Nos. 1 and 3 New Zealand Native Rifles and the Auckland Rifles paraded at the Drill Hall last evening, and were inspected by Lieut.-Colonel Banks, the officer commanding the district. The men were-afterwards given instruction in physical drill and bayonet exercise by Sergeant-Major Carpenter. A special meeting of the No. 1 Native Rifles was held at the conclusion of the parade last evening, for the purpose of electing a captain. The company unanimously elected Mr G. Bertram Hutton to the position. Mr Sutton, who stands about 6ft 2in, is a son of Major-General Hutton, and a native of this colony. He has had experience in volunteering in England. The Auckland Naval Artillery hold their annual social in St. Benedict's Hall on Friday, 21st inst. A good programme is being prepared, and the gathering is expected to prove a great success.
