DEEP SINKER,
By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.)
THAMES, this day. A rumour is current here to-day that ! the Vanguard reef has been cut, but Mr Dunlop informs me it is, as yet, unfortunately without foundation. The class of country being penetrated is, however, improving daily, it being exI ct'llent sandstone, interlaced with numerous quartz stringers, with nice mineral indications. The work of extending1 the northern cross-cut at the 450 feet level, where the reef is reported to have been met with, is being carried on by contract, and according to the plan a distance of 40 feet needs to be driven before the reef can be cut, though Mr Dunlop says he would not be surprised to meet the reef any day. The cross-cut is in a distance of 971 feet, and never did things look so promising at the mine as they do at present.
