RECRUITING THE MILITIA,
AMENDED CONSCRIPTION BILL,
LONDON, July 8,
In the House of Lords the Marquis of Landsdowne, Secretary of State for War, introduced an Amended Militia Gonscription Bill, providing for the selection of men by ballot between the ages of 18 and 35, The. Marquis explained that owing to. the activity of the laboxir market.it was getting increasingly difficult to recruit the militia, which feeds the army. He personally disliked the use of compulsion, and: would only adopt such a course when there was no other way of providing for the country's safety.
