CITY SCHOOLS COMMITTEE.
A meeting of the City Schools Committee was held last evening at Wellesley- street School, there being in attendance Mr Geo. Squirrell (chairman). Dr. King, Dr. Walker, Messrs J. McLeod, A. Rosser, G. 11. Powiey, P. Crowe.
School Attendance. —The Chairman stated that the attendance at the city schools for the month of June was below that of last year. There were on the roll 3069, against 3153 last year, the average attendance being 2599, against 2766. The epidemic was still troublesome
Nelson-ytreet School. —A letter was received from the Board of Education stating that the Committee's request for additional accommodation nt the Nelson-street school would be duly considered by the Board.
New School. —The Chairman moved: "This Committee, viewing with satisfaction the decision arrived at by the. Hoard as to the necessity for a new school, appoint a sub-committee to inspect available sites in the city district, and recommend the most suitable to the Board." —Dr. Walker seconded. A sub-committee was appointed to select sites consisting of the Chairman, Dr. Walker and Mr J. McLeod.
Overloaded State of Syllabus.—The Secretary for Education wrote acknowledging- letter from the Committee relating to the overloaded state of the syllabus. He stated that the advisability of the adoption of the principle of freedom of classification had been for some time under consideration. The adoption of such a prin- | ciple would greatly modify the rigid effect of the standard requirements and the modification of the syllabus itself would therefore be a question for further consideration after it had been decided what course should be followed in regard to standard passes. —Communications from several Committees were read with reference to the Committee's letter re overcrowded state of the syllabus. The opinions were very varied. Vacancy on the Board of Education. ■ —A communication was read from the Board of Education stating that nominations for the vacant seat would close on 24th July.—The Chairman stated that Messrs'j. Blades and E. W. Burton were the annoimced candidates. —It was agreed to defer making a nomination until next meeting. Beresford Street School.—Mr H. B. Lusk, D 4, was selected to fill the vacancy of second assistant at Beresford "street School. It was agreed to forward a letter to the Board recommending Mr Lusk.
