PURCHASED BY BRITAIN
LONDON, July 4
The House of Commons, by 223 votes to 101, agreed to vote £865,000 for the purchase of Nigeria from the Chartered Company. Sir Michael Hicks-Beach, Chancellor of the Exchequer, praised the company, and stated that notwithstanding that Anglo-French relations in West Africa in 1897 were more strained than the public appreciated, the company's free hand threatened a terrible war.
