THE KAWAKAWA SENSATION
ARREST OF WIKI
AN UNTRUE REPORT.
DID NOT SHOOT HIS WIFE
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
KAWAKAWA, this day.
Constables Sheehan and Keep brought in the prisoner Wiki from Papakoti last night. There is no truth in the, report regarding his having shot his wife. The report arose through his having threatened to shoot her, and the daughter having heard the report of a gun after she ran away with a child in fright. Wiki, it is asserted, had fired at her first, but the shot struck a tree close by. The police found two guns and a six chambered revolver also a kit of powder and ball cartridges in prisoner's whare. The revolver was fully charged, and one gun had an empty easingin it. The prisoner was formally charged this morning with shooting with intent, and remanded for eightdays. The excitement caused by the false report was so great yesterday that Constable Beddeck came over by order from Hikurangi.
