WELLINGTON NOTES.

WELLINGTON, Monday THE PREMIER.
The Premier, who returned from. Woodville on Saturday night, transacted v ]arg-e amount of public business at his residence during1 to-day, keeping1 several secretaries, heads of departments, under-secretaries and messengers on the move. :
THE WELLINGTON UNEMPLOYED,
The municipal authorities are doing all possible to find work for the unemployed. Several men will be put on road formation on the city boundary, and other labour will be absorbed as early .as the necessary j)reparations can be effected.
THE OHAU INQUIRY,
Evidence in connection with the loss of the Ohau will be taken in Wellington next Monday by Mr Northeroft, S.M., and Captains Marceil and Bignell, who were appointed to report as to the loading of the vessel when she left Greymouth on her last voyage. Amongst those who have been summoned as witnesses are Captain Strung (assistant Marine Supperintendent of the Union Co.), Capt. Xordstrum (of the Haupiri), and Mr Me Vicar, one of the Government Inspectors of Machinery, who was formerly chief eng-ineer of the ill-fated vessel.
MANUFACTURERS' DEPUTATION,
The deputation of manufacturers which waited on the Minister of. Marine this morning comprised Messrs W. Cable, Seagar, J. P. Luke, D. Robertson, C. Seagar. A. Kelly, A. R. Heslop and A. Graham.
ME JUSTICE EDWARDS.
Judge Edwards left for Napier this morning in order to preside at the criminal sessions in that town.
SCHOOL DRILL.
Classes for the instruction in drill of the teachers controlling the school cadet corps are to be held in the Boys' Institute Building- after the winter holidays. The building has been lent to the Education Board for the purpose. The 500 rifles for the use of the cadets are on the way out to the colony.
WELLINGTON COLLIE CLUB.
The Wellington Collie Club has a membership of upwards of one hundred. Since the club's inception many of its members have imported dogs which would do credit to any fancier in the world.
CALIFORNIAN THISTLE.
Referring to the spreading of 'the Californian thistle in Canterbury, Otago, and other districts of the colony, Mr Kirk, Government Biologist, says the plan suggested for its extermination, namely, preventing the formation of leaves for two seasons, has never been known to fail where his directions have been followed.
PERSONAL PARS
Mr Ritchie, Secretary of the Agricultaral Department, and Mr Gilruth, Chief Veterinary Surgeon, returned from the South on Sunday.
Mr George Humphries, of the Press Association staff, who is to resume the duties of agent of the Association at the cable station at Wakapuaka, left for Nelson with his bride on Saturda} r afternoon. Air A. M. Burns, whom he relieves, will return to Wellington on Wednesday.
The officers and crew of the Takapuna are erecting a stone at the head of the grave of Andrew Hewson, the seaman who was washed overboard and drowned as- the vessel was entering Wellington Heads a few weeks ago. •..,'•..:■-.
