MR SCOBIE MACKENZIE AT INVERCARGILL.
INVERCAR.GILL, Monday.
Mr Scobie Mackenzie, M.H.R., delivered his first address to an Invercargill audience in the theatre tonight, the building being packed, although it was a dirty, wet night, Mr Mackenzie spoke for two and urbali hours, and had a most courteous hearing while the approbation of the audience was distinctly warm and sustained. He dealt at length with the figures of the member for Mataura, and denied the present Government's claims to be the first that had passed or proposed labour or social legislation. He spoke strongly against, the Government's administration, and wound up by stating that Seddomsm and independence^ of character could not live together. Strong- demands were made to Mr Mackenzie to go on, and these failing, his sitting down was marked by pronounced and long cheering, and the applause was renewed when he replied to a vote -of thanks. He specially thanked the audience for the magnificent reception and hearing given him, saying he couild not have got a better in Dunedin.
