ANOTHER VICTORY FOR NEWTON
TWO DRAWN GAMES,
The semi-final matches in the iirst round oi' the Cup matches were played on Saturday, when Bthe fine weather and the prospect of some good football drew a large attenda nee at Potter's Paddock. Grafton and City had a very even game on No. 1 ground, and the restilt was inconclusive, each team leaving the field with 3 points to its credit. H. Smith scored a try for Grafton, and Wilson one for City. On No. 2 ground Suburbs and Ponsonby also played a drawn game, each scoring 3 points, while Newton defeated Parnell on No. 3 ground by 7 points to 3, after an exciting finish. In this latter match the score was 3 points each until very near the call of time, but Roberts succeeded in potting a splendid goal for Newton, who thus won on the post, so to speak. Newton are now leading for the championship, but should North Shore score a win next Saturday these two teams will be level again.
