NEGLECTED CHILDREN.
A SAD CASE. A sorry spectacle was witnessed at , the Police Court this morning, when six children were brought before Mr H. W. Brabant, S.M., for being found in a house in Chapel-street with reputed prostitutes. The names of j the children were as follows: —Ida ! Pick Lynch, nine years four months; Marie Baker Lynch, seven years three months; May McCauley, nine years one month; Thos. McCauley, five years one month; Wm. McCauley, three years ten months; Michael Me- ' Cauley, two years eight months. Sergt. Gordon, who made investigations, Sarah Beeaton, a single woman living in the House with Mrs Ellen Lynch, in Chapel-street, Mrs Williams and John Strathearn, Relieving Officer of ; the Charitable Aid Board, gavee cvi- ; dence as to the neglected state of the children. Beaton had been getting assistance from the Board for the maintenance of her children. It appeared that on Monday night last two of the children were found by neighbours sleeping in a closet and one in a donkey cart. When the police went for the children they were detained i for over an hour so that the neighbours could get clothes enough to bring them decently through the streets. The woman Beaton had lived with Mrs Lynch for two and a half years, and William McCauley is alleged to be the father of her four children. The Magistrate committed the children to the Ponsonby Industrial School, to be brought up in the Roman Catholic faith.
