PROPOSED BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY.

At a meeting of the Queen's Statue Commemmoration Committee yesterday Mr D. Goldie, Majror, suggested the formation of a beautifying association for Auckland. On the motion of Mr P. Dignan it was decided that it is desirable to form such an association as the Mayor has suggested. The Mayor gave some interesting particulars of similar associations, and pointed out the advantages derivable from them. For instance, a short time ago Mrs . Boyd bequeathed £ 1000 .to be spent on statuary for the parks. He did not knew if the City "Council were the best persons to select that statuarj\ ■ Then he had received a number of subscriptions for seating the parks, but could not find any unanimity as to style of seat. The beautifying association could help in that direction. Then they could consider the best kinds; of trees to be planted,'in the streets. They might also bring pressure to bear on the Government in connection with the opening up of places of interest. The Rev. W. Beatty moved, 'That the gentlemen present (Messrs D. Goldie. P. Dignan, W. J. Courtney, H. Rees George, Hon. W. Swanson, Colonel Burton, and Rev. Beatty) be a provisional committee to carry out the suggestions.' The motion was carried and Mr A. ■J. Alloru was appointed hon.sec. pro tern.
