j LONDON, June 1. At the close of the day's play the ! Australians had lost S wickets for 238 runs. The batsmen were reserved, especially with Grace, taking no liberties with the bowling. Gregory and Hill enlivened the game for a time, but they took many risky runs. Hill paid the penalty by getting run out when his score stood at 52. Hirst replaced Rhodes at 146, Jackson taking Hayward's place at 151. ■Hirst succeeded in capturing Gre- ! gory's wicket, after the Sj'dney batsj man had scored 48.
Kelly made several lucky snicks, and was missed at the wickets before scoring. One wicket fell for 14, two Cor 45, ■three for 109, four for 166, five for 167, six for 229, seven for 229, and eight for 238. The game was quiet. The bowling was clever throughout and the fielding brilliant. The attendance numbered 15,000. According to arrangements the stumps were drawn at half-past six p.m.' s .
