MT. WELLINGTON ROAD BOARD.
The usual monthly meeting was held at the Board's office, Ellerslie, on Wednesday last. All the members were present. The clerk read the letter which he had written at the instance of the Board to the District Traffic Manager of the Railway,1 suggesting certain improvements at the station, which would do away with the necessity of passengers having to cross the rails, and also requesting the Department to move the cattle stops on the north side of the Panmure Road back to the road line. A reply had been received, stating that owing to the nearness of the station and platform to the crossing want of room would render it impossible to effect the desired alterations. The clerk was then instructed to write and formally protest against the present arrangements, under which passengers have '~ to cross the rails to reach some of the trains going north: In order to, evade payment of the ten per cent, addition to rates which remain unpaid, six months after demand made; some ratepayers have j n ; the past paid the rates (less the ten r-'i. cent, fine) into the Board's ac-
count at the bank. As this is an ir v x regular proceeding the clerk had been instructed to write to the manager of the bank drawing his attention to Bection 48 of the Rating Act, 1894, •which provides that all moneys due to the Board must be paid into the office of the Board, and requesting him to decline acceptance of such payments. A reply was received, in •which the manager of the bank agreed to comply with the Board's instructions. It was resolved to instruct Messrs Devore and Cooper to take proceedings for the recovery of unpaid rates. Mr J. Donnelly was appointed ranger for the district. The annual meeting of the Board •will be held at noon on May Ist prox., and the annual meeting of ratepayers at 1 p.m. same day. A poll, if necessary, for the election of two members to fill the vacancies caused by the retirement of Messrs Morrin and Thompspn, whose terms of office expire by effluxion of time .will be taken on 6th May. Accounts amounting to £66 8s 4tl were passed for payment, and the Board rose. ..
